The Soloist:Sue Kazama - Piano
Sue Kazama has enjoyed being part of the musical community in Juneau for over 30 years. After growing up in Medford, Oregon, where she studied with Tatiana Anderson, she studied for two years at Drake University with Guy Wuellner and David Harris. In 1977 she and her husband, Blake, came to Juneau and she continued her piano studies at UAS with Jean Paul Billaud, Alberto Rafols, Neal O’Doan and Alexander Tutunov. She also studied chamber music, music appreciation and performance techniques with Linda Rosenthal, who, along with John d’Armand at UAS, have been a continual and wonderful source of encouragement, mentoring and friendship. Many in Juneau know Sue as an accompanist and teacher. As a teacher she has worked almost exclusively with children, hoping to share with them the joy of music as they grow up. In recent years she has seen that her skills are needed more as an accompanist than as a teacher and has worked with almost every organization involved with the arts here in Juneau. Some of those organizations are: the Juneau Symphony Orchestra, UAS, the Juneau-Douglas School District, JAHC, Perseverance Theater, Juneau Jazz and Classics, Juneau Oratorio Choir and the Juneau Bach Society. Her biggest projects have been with Juneau Lyric Opera and Opera to Go as rehearsal pianist and vocal coach. These productions include: Carmen, Cosi fan tutte, Candide, Susannah, La Boheme, L’enfant et les sortileges, Barber of Seville, Don Giovanni, Tosca, Dido and Aeneas and Il Trittico. Among local soloists she has performed with Linda and Paul Rosenthal, John d’Armand, Mel Flood, Joyce Parry Moore, Dan and Kathleen Wayne, Philippe Damerval, Jay Query, and Brett and Cheryl Crawford. | |
