Rodeo - Aaron CoplandCopland - Rodeo is one of the most iconic American compositions. The Hoe Down was used in the "Beef, it's what's for dinner" campaign. It's probably the piece that's most associated with the western US, even though Copland rarely left NY City. West Side Story Selections for Orchestra - Leonard Bernstein"WSS is my all-time favorite musical. I have always felt that it was Leonard Bernstein's best composition. The original production brought together Bernstein with Sondheim and Jerome Robbins, and the result was spectacular. The music was beautifully singable, and the dances were rhythmic, jazz-influenced marvels. This piece, unlike the Symphonic Dances from WSS, includes many of the songs." -Kyle Wiley Pickett
The Sound of Music - Richard Rogers and Oscar HammersteinRogers and Hammerstein's musicals are some of the most quintessentially American compositions. Oklahoma raised the musical comedy to high-art status. The Sound of Music became their most successful movie musical, and nearly all of the songs from the show were hit tunes on their own. King Cotton March and The Stars and Stripes Forever - John Philip SousaStars and Stripes Forever - This piece speaks for itself. If there were an unofficial national anthem, this would be it. King Cotton March - King Cotton is one of Sousa's lesser known marches (when compared to S&S, Washington Post, Liberty Bell), but it is a wonderful example of the form. The themes are beautiful. It's an exciting march. Battle Hymn of the RepublicThe Battle Hymn was an American abolitionist hymn written during the Civil War as an anthem for the North. It has since become a standard American patriotic song. It is a powerful piece of music, and it's especially exciting when performed by an orchestra. The 1812 Overture Finale - Pyotr Ilyich TchaikovskyAlthough there is really nothing American at all about the 1812 Overture, it has become the customary finale for most 4th of July concerts. It's exciting. It uses cannons. What more can you say about it? |
