Beethoven Violin Concerto in D, Op. 61
Mussorgksy Pictures at an Exhibition
Modeste Mussorgsky’s “Pictures at an Exhibition” was written as an homage to his friend, artist Victor Hartmann. It takes the listener through a “musical gallery” of vibrant orchestral color and dramatically shifting moods. Mussorgsky’s masterpiece encompasses breathtaking emotions and, in Maurice Ravel’s imaginative orchestration, is the Russian genius’ most beloved and revered symphonic opus. Also featured on the program is the Juneau Symphony’s brilliant concertmaster, Franz Felkl, performing Beethoven’s monumental Violin Concerto. The work’s purity and tactful simplicity has placed it among the most revered and adored concerti ever written.
